Abstract

1319099 Polyvinyl alcohol filaments KURAKAY CO Ltd 19 Nov 1970 [25 Nov 1969 30 April 1970] 55038/70 Heading B5B [Also in Divisions B7 C3 and D1] A molecularly oriented polyvinyl alcohol fibre having a yarn tenacity greater than 7À5 g./d. at 120‹ C. and an initial yarn modulus greater than 100 g./d. at 120‹ C. and containing 0À2- 0À9% by wt. (based on the weight of P.V.A.) of boric acid or a water-soluble borate, is made by preparing an aqueous P.V.A. spinning solution containing boric acid or a water-soluble borate, spinning this solution in an aqueous coagulation bath containing an alkali metal hydroxide and sodium sulphate and finally drawing the spun fibre. The preferred procedure after spinning comprises (a) drawing between rollers, (b) neutralization of any alkali adhering to the fibre, (c) wet heat drawing, (d) rinsing to adjust the amount of boric acid or borate to within the defined limits, (e) drying and (f) dry-heat drawing. The spun fibre is preferably drawn by 1300 to 1800%. The spinning solution preferably contains between 1 and 5% wt. (based on the P.V.A.) of the boric acid or water soluble borate and the P.V.A. concentration is preferably between 10 and 30% by wt. The pH of the solution is preferably between 3 and 5. The coagulation bath preferably contains 10-100 g./l. of alkali metal hydroxide and 100-330 g./l. of sodium sulphate.
