Abstract

1469623 Hollow PVA fibres KURARAY CO Ltd 20 March 1975 [25 March 1974] 11692/75 Heading B5B Hollow fibres of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) containing 0À001-5À0% based on PVA or its derivative, of boric acid or borate and having one hollow portion continuous in the direction of the fibre axis per cross-section of the fibre with a void content of 25-80% are formed by spinning an aqueous solution of the PVA or its derivative containing 0À2-5À0% PVA or its derivative into an alkaline dehydrating salt bath containing at least 0À1 mole/litre of alkali metal carbonate salt, drawing the coagulated fibre under conditions that will satisfy the following formula and (where #n s is the double reactive index of the surface layer of the coagulated fibre, #n c is the double refractive index of the central portion of the coagulated fibre, X is the parameter of the distance from the centre in the coagulated fibre and is in the range 0 to 1, the point X=0 indicating the centre and the point X=1 indicating the surface and #n x is the double refractive index of the coagulated fibre at the point where the distance from the centre is X) and treating the fibres with an acid. The fibres may be heattreated after drying or may be subjected to chemical treatment.
