Abstract
<PICT:0911341/IV(a)/1> A polyacrylonitrile fibre, in the as-spun state, is drawn from 1,8-3,0 times its original length in an aqueous bath having a temperature from 85 DEG -100 DEG C. While the fibre is still in a highly hydrated state, and held at 80 DEG -115 DEG C., a pressure of 9-30 p.s.i. may be applied, transversely to the longitudinal axes of the fibre at a plurality of points along its length, so as to reduce the loop work-to-break tenacity of the fibre whilst substantially retaining its breaking tenacity. The fibre in the hydrated state may contain 30-55% water, solvent, or water plus solvent. Acrylonitrile homopolymers or copolymers containing at least 85% acrylonitrile and up to 15% of a copolymerizable ethylenically unsaturated monomer may be dry-spun into fibres and treated as above. A copolymer containing also 0,1%-10% of a copolymerizable sulphonic acid or sulphonate salt of said acid may be spun. A preferred polymer is an acrylonitrile/methyl acrylate/sodium styrene sulphonate copolymer. Examples of other suitable copolymerizable ethylenically unsaturated monomers are given. Such a spun fibre may be of denier 13-27, breaking tenacity 1,1-2,0 g./denier, and loop work-to-break value 0,18-0,68 g. cm./denier-cm., the tenacity and loop work-to-break values being within the area a-b-c-e of the Figure when the fibre denier is 13-18, and within the area a-b-d-e when the fibre denier is 19-27. Specifications 586,881, 765,585 and U.S.A. Specifications 2,743,994 and 2,837,500 are referred to.
