Beschreibungdescription
CELLULOSISCHE FORMKÖRPER MIT NICHTRUNDEM QUERSCHNITT UND DEREN VERWENDUNG IN VERBUNDWERKSTOFFENCELLULOSIC FORM BODIES WITH NON-CIRCULAR CROSS-SECTION AND THEIR USE IN COMPOSITE MATERIALS
The invention relates to readily meterable cellulosic molded body with non-circular cross-section and their use in composite materials, wherein they are metered in particular by means of mixing units in melts.
Cellulosic fibers are increasingly being used to reinforce matrix materials such as polypropylene or other polymers in composites, replacing glass fibers, for example. The advantages of cellulosic fibers over glass fibers are their lower specific gravity and improved disposability, since they can easily be burned together with the matrix material, for example, or degraded together with the latter in the case of biodegradable matrix materials.
Suitable cellulosic fibers can be prepared in different ways. The easiest way is to use cotton and other natural fibers such as hemp or flax, which are already fibrous by nature. The problem, however, is the natural products inherent unevenness of the fibers in thickness, length and surface finish. These irregularities cause a more complex processing. So they may need to be cut to a uniform length. Apart from cotton, the natural fibers for high performance composites are also too coarse, so there is no uniform distribution in the matrix material and no adequate surface between fiber and matrix. Many of the natural fibers are also prone to severe yellowing or have an unpleasant odor.
Likewise, the use of pulp fibers is possible, which are prepared in a known way by Zellstoffkochverfahren from wood.
However, commercially available pulps are pressed into sheets or rolls after production and dried. The fibers can then be very poorly isolated from the pressed-sheet. In addition, the purity of the pulp depends on the type of cooking and whether paper or chemical pulp is used. This in turn affects the strengths of both the single fiber and the finished composite. Lignin as a companion disturbs especially in cheap pulps, since a composite material produced in this way can discolour dark brown. Furthermore, the lignin, which is thermally stable only up to about 150 ° C in the deformation process, decomposes and gives rise to emissions which make these composites of many applications, e.g. in the automotive interior, exclude.
By well-known spinning process, however, can be better defined and improved in their properties and adapted to the intended use cellulosic synthetic fibers such as viscose or lyocell.
The cellulosic fibers are usually introduced via a metering screw in an extruder and mixed there with the polymer. Due to the good fiber-fiber adhesion, however, the individual fibers are poorly free-flowing and, for example, so-called bridge formation in the metering funnel of the metering screw and subsequent blockage can occur. This has the consequence that the fibers can be dosed only very unevenly, which in turn has the consequence that there are significant quality variations in the fiber-reinforced polymer.
There were therefore already approaches to improve the metering of these cellulosic fibers. For example, WO 2006/032406 describes the treatment of a spun fiber strand with an aqueous dispersion for applying a size. With this sizing a cohesion of the individual fibers is created. Subsequently, this simple strand is crushed into free-flowing fiber bundles. This method has the disadvantage that with the fiber bundles, an additional substance, namely the size, in the composite
Substances is introduced. There, it may undesirably affect the mechanical properties, in particular the fiber-matrix interactions which are essential for the effectiveness of the fiber reinforcement. In addition, the method of WO 2006/032406 requires extensive intervention directly on the spinning machine, such as the application and drying of the size or the merging and twisting of several spun fiber strands in front of the cutting machine. Twisting degrades the ability of the bundles to open.
Diese Pultrusionsverfahren erfordern neben einem erheblichen Aufwand für die Pultrusionseinheit auch eine frühe Festlegung auf das Matrix-Polymer, dem die cellulosische Faser zugemischt werden soll.EP 1436130 and WO 03/016011 disclose so-called pultrusion processes in which a spun-fiber strand initially exits together with the matrix polymer through a nozzle opening, is encased with the matrix polymer and the solidified strand is then comminuted into granules, which dose well should let. These pultrusion require in addition to a considerable effort for the pultrusion and an early determination of the matrix polymer to which the cellulosic fiber is to be added.
Another variant for the preparation of easily metered granules containing both reinforcing fibers and a thermoplastic matrix polymer is described in EP 1097033. Here, a strand which contains both the reinforcing fiber material, for example cellulosic or mineral fibers and the matrix polymer each in the form of endless filaments, pulled through a heated opening, so that the matrix filaments (partially) melt and the reinforcing fibers are incorporated into the molten mass , At the same time, the fiber strand is twisted when pulled through, so that the reinforcing fibers are present in a spiral shape in the strand subsequently cut into granules. This spiral-shaped layer causes the reinforcing fibers have a greater length than the individual granules themselves. This method should be energetically cheaper compared to the simple pultrusion process, but otherwise has the same principal, already mentioned above disadvantages.
In the literature, there are also mentions of cellulosic synthetic fibers with ribbon-shaped, so probably rectangular cross-section. For example, the invention according to DD 247 928 relates to a large-size spinning device for spinning viscose for the production of threads, fibers and tapes. However, an embodiment for a ribbon or other specific indication that this has ever been realized is not included. In DE 0969389 a ribbon was produced by the viscose process in Example 4. Shaped bodies according to the lyocell method are not described therein. Also, DE 33 19 603 describes the production of cellulose regenerate strips with different edge ratios, but not those produced by the lyocell method.
In Chemiefasern/Textilindustrie, 44./96. Mai/1. In the Lenzinger reports 76/1997 is mentioned on page 127, the possibility to produce ribbon-like filaments according to the lyocell method. These should be used for binding yarns and net packaging. In chemical fibers / textile industry, 44./96. Vintage, 1994, p. 701, ribbon fibers from lyocell are also mentioned as possible developments. However, the bands mentioned in these two articles are those which are several orders of magnitude coarser than those claimed in the present patent application. Fig. 6 of the article Lenzinger Berichte 76/1997, p. 127 explicitly mentions 3500 dtex as the titer. Also Wierach P., Schönecker A., Construction Methods and Applications of Piezo Components in Adaptronics, Adaptronic Congress 2005, 31 May / 1. June, Göttingen discloses ribbon-shaped lyocell-shaped bodies, which are also coarser than those claimed in the present patent application by several orders of magnitude: From the minimum dimensions of 100 × 400 μm mentioned in Figure 4 of this publication, a titer of about 1100 dtex results.
However, other applications for cellulosic synthetic fibers of rectangular cross-section are not found in the literature.
The object of the present invention was therefore to provide cellulosic shaped bodies in such a manner that the cellulosic shaped bodies can be better dosed in comparison with the known prior art and at the same time improve the reinforcing properties of these shaped bodies in the composite material become.
This object has surprisingly been achieved by cellulosic molded bodies with non-circular cross-section, preferably with rectangular cross-section for reinforcement in composite materials, wherein the edge ratio a / b of the cross section is at least 2: 1, preferably at least 4: 1 and these moldings a titer in Range 0.1 to 15.0 dtex, preferably between 1.3 and 9.0 dtex and a cut length in the range 0.5 to 15.0 mm, preferably between 3.0 and 10.0 mm.
The moldings can be coated with a Gleitavivage before further use. It is important to pay attention to the lowest possible Avivagegehalt in order to influence as little as possible the later composite material properties as described above. In general, an emery content of 0.2 to 2.5 wt .-%, based on the total mass of the refined molded body should not be exceeded. In addition, the type of Gleitavivage depends on the respectively provided matrix polymer. For example, an apolar lubricant is very well suited for use in apolar thermoplastic matrix polymers. In particular for the production of composite materials with a matrix of polyolefins, a silicone oil is well suited as Gleitavivage.
The cellulosic shaped bodies can be spun in principle by any of the methods generally known for this purpose, wherein suitable nozzles must be used depending on the desired cross-sectional shape. After the required coagulation, washing and possibly further post-treatment steps, the molded body strand is cut to the desired length by means of cutting machines known to the person skilled in the art and dried to the required moisture content. Depending on the conditions on site, the moldings, for example, for transport, dried to low moisture contents and moistened again before pressing to the necessary value, for example by spraying. Depending on requirements, a Gleitavivage is applied to the moldings.
The cellulosic moldings are preferably prepared by the viscose, modal or lyocell process. Mixtures of at least two of these types of fibers can also be processed together into compacts, for example.
An additional advantage of the present invention is that due to the good distribution of the individual shaped bodies in matrix polymers, a smaller amount of individual shaped bodies is necessary in order to achieve the same mechanical properties.
The present invention is also the use of the above-described cellulosic moldings for reinforcement in polymer-containing composite materials, wherein the moldings are introduced by means of a metering device in a melt of the polymer and then mixed with the polymer melt. This admixing preferably takes place in a suitably equipped extruder or kneader. Suitable apparatuses for this purpose as well as suitable metering devices are known to the person skilled in the art. Particularly suitable metering devices are gravimetrically operating devices designed for granulates, for example gravimetric screw feeders.
In particular, provided with a Gleitavivage shaped body according to the invention can be much better dose in a conventional metering unit than otherwise comparable fibers, but have a round cross-section. Pelleting is not absolutely necessary for the shaped bodies according to the invention.
In a further, preferred form of the use according to the invention, the cellulosic molded bodies are shaped into pellets before they are introduced into the dosing unit.
The length of the compacts is not critical to the success of the invention. In the method for producing the compacts described below, however, these usually arise in a length of 1.0 - 30.0 mm. Because they are not held together by binders or sizing agents, they can even break into shorter length rods without compromising subsequent metering capability.
The stability of the pellets can, if desired, in particular be increased by adding about 0.01 to 25 wt .-% of a commercially available hot melt adhesive to the fibers. The hot melt adhesive can be mixed with the fibers in powder form before pelleting. In the later composite material, these small amounts of hot melt adhesives do not have a negative effect according to experience.
For special applications, a portion of a polymer and / or one or more other additives such as adhesion promoters may be added before or during the production of the compacts. Even if the moldings according to the invention are to be mixed into the matrix polymer without intermediate pelleting, they can be provided with an adhesion promoter.
Suitable adhesion promoters between cellulose and polypropylene include MAPP (maleic anhydride-grafted polypropylene). Further examples of possible additives are all additives customary in plastics processing, such as e.g. Stabilizers, dyes, UV protection, pigments and property enhancers such as e.g. Impact modifiers.
Mainly, however, the invention relates to compacts that do not contain a proportion of a matrix polymer.
This method consists in that cellulosic molded bodies having a titre in the range 0.1 to 15.0 dtex and a cut length in the range 0.5 to 15 mm are pressed in a shaping device through shaping channels. An essential feature of the method according to the invention is the L / D ratio of these shaping channels. It should be between 1: 1 and 4: 1, preferably between 1: 1 and 3: 1, where L is the length and D is the diameter of the cylindrical part of a forming channel with no inlet and relief cone. This L / D ratio significantly affects the compaction experienced by the molded bodies in the compact. This has an effect on the re-dissolvability of the compacts as well as the molding damage occurring during pressing. The resulting compacts have a diameter of 2.0 to 10.0 mm and a length of mostly 1.0 to 30.0 mm.
In order to keep the damage of the moldings low and the re-solubility when mixing in the matrix polymer high, a moisture content of 30 to 80 wt .-% water is set in the moldings before the pelleting process. The water is only used to make the pellets. It acts as a plasticizer for the fibers. The water partially dries up during the pelleting process, which develops heat due to the mechanical forces and friction acting on it. The pellets are subsequently dried to conditioning moisture.
If the moldings were provided before the pelleting with a Gleitavivage, in particular a silicone oil, such humidification is not necessary, since even the lubrication holds the mold body damage low and the Wiederauflösbarkeit high.
The short-cut molded articles can be metered into the shaping device with a coarse-working metering device whose accuracy and uniformity would not be suitable for the production of composite materials, but which is not sensitive to blockages by the molded articles. As a shaping device, for example, a flat die press is suitable, wherein the shaped body, for example by means of a muller through a die, d. H. a plate with regularly arranged shaping channels are pressed.
In such a flat die press, the shaped bodies to be pelletized are placed in the press room and form a layer of material on the die. Through the rollers of the pug mill, the shaped body layer is precompressed and pressed into the shaping channels. In these shaping channels, the compression takes place to the pellets. The distance between the rollers of the muller and the die should be adjustable in order to allow adaptation to different moldings and a compensation of the material wear.
In the shaping channels, the moldings are further compressed and formed into cylindrical strands which emerge below the mold. There, the strand is cut off to the desired length, for example by a rotating knife, and the pellets thus obtained are discharged from the shaping device.
To produce larger quantities of the pellets according to the invention, a so-called ring die press is even better suited than the flat die press.
The emerging from the molding compacts can be metered directly or after appropriate intermediate storage, transport, etc. by means of known metering devices for granules, etc. in a melt extruder and mixed there with the respective matrix polymer. Due to the shear forces occurring in such an extruder, the compacts are quickly completely divided and the individual fibers can be distributed very homogeneously in the matrix polymer.
In the following the invention will be described by way of example. However, the invention is expressly not limited to this example, but includes all other embodiments based on the same inventive concept.
Tabelle 1 zeigt die Messergebnisse („Faser“).Example 1 (comparative example): Lyocell fibers having a denier of 6.7 dtex were spun in the known manner and washed in the fiber cable, after-treated, treated with a silicone avivage and dried. Only when dried these fibers were cut with a guillotine cutter to a staple length of 6 mm. As a result, so-called stacks were obtained. These are fiber bundles that are so far compressed at the interface by the cutting machine, that results in a certain cohesion of the individual fibers. Although these stacks could be dosed significantly worse than the pellets produced according to the invention, metering was possible in principle with the experimental device used. These stacks were therefore metered into the melt extruder without intervening compression under otherwise constant experimental conditions, mixed with a melt of a commercial polypropylene while adding one of 3% by weight of adhesion promoter, based on the total mass of the composite material, and prepared test specimens for tensile tests. Table 1 shows the measurement results ("fiber").
Tabelle 1 zeigt die Messergebnisse („Bändchen“).Example 2 (according to the invention): Under otherwise identical conditions as in Example 1 were using slot-shaped nozzles with an edge ratio of 1000: 80 Lyocellformkörper with a titer of 6.7 dtex, a cut length of 6 mm and rectangular Cross-section produced (a = 61 pm, b = 8 pm, ie edge ratio a: b = 7: 1) spun and prepared specimen for tensile tests. Table 1 shows the measurement results ("Ribbon").
