Abstract
Pure phosphoric acid is produced by decomposing by means of sulphuric acid barium phosphate obtained by the treatment of di- or tri-sodium phosphate with barium sulphide. In an example, to a solution of barium sulphide crystallized di-sodium phosphate and a solution of caustic soda are added until no further precipitation occurs. After filtering and washing free from sodium sulphide which may be recovered, the precipitate of barium phosphate is decomposed by means of sulphuric acid and the barium sulphate removed. In another example sodium phosphate is formed by treating commercial phosphoric acid with sodium carbonate and caustic soda. Barium phosphate is then precipitated by means of barium sulphide and treated as in the first example. Potassium and ammonium phosphates may be used in place of sodium phosphates.ALSO:Barium phosphate is produced by treating barium sulphide with di- or tri-sodium phosphate. The barium phosphate precipitated is filtered off and the sodium sulphide in solution may be recovered as a bye-product. Ammonium or potassium phosphates may be used in place of sodium phosphates.
