Abstract
299,995. Pritchard, D. A., and United Alkali Co., Ltd. Oct. 21, 1927. Caustic soda. - Dilute caustic liquor, e.g. effluent from electrolytic cells, may be purified from sodium chloride by evaporation, and subsequent addition of a salt or salts of sulphuric acids, such as sodium sulphate, or sulphuric acid itself. When metallic sulphates other than sodium are used, the metallic hydroxide formed by reaction with the caustic soda may be separated. The dilute liquor is evaporated until it contains from 37 to 39 per cent of NaO in solution, and the precipitated impurities are removed. The remaining sodium chloride is removed by treating the evaporated solution with sodium sulphate, anhydrous or otherwise, whereby a precipitate is obtained, containing the greater part of the sodium chloride. The clarified liquor may be used as such or evaporated to obtain solid caustic soda. The amount of sulphate added is dependent upon the amount of sodium chloride present.
