Abstract

In the production of anhydrous sodium sulphite by evaporating and crystallizing a concentrated solution thereof, the solution is made alkaline with caustic alkali before evaporation, whereby any iron impurity is precipitated, the crystals formed do not scale, and iron apparatus is not attacked by the solution. The solution may be obtained by gassing a sodium carbonate solution with sulphur dioxide, filtering off impurities, boiling to remove residual carbon dioxide, and then adding caustic soda in slight excess of that required to precipitate iron. The solution, which should have a pH value of at least 10,34 is then evaporated under reduced pressure at a temperature between 55 DEG C. and its boiling point, evaporation and crystallization being simultaneous.
