Abstract
249,402. Jahl, A. April 18, 1925, [Convention date]. Barium hydrate and sulphide. - Barium sulphide is treated with a solution of a polysulphide or a caustic alkali or a suspension of an alkaline earth hydrate and the mixture is leached with hot water to obtain a solution from which, on cooling, barium hydrate crystallizes. The reagents mentioned are barium polysulphide BaS4, and milk of lime. The mother-liquor may be treated with a caustic alkali to produce more barium hydrate, or the caustic alkali may be added to the hot solution before the production of barium hydrate crystals, in which case almost all the barium hydrate separates in one operation. The mother liquor mav be treated with carbon dioxide to precipitate barium carbonate mixed with sulphur. This mixture may be heated with carbon and with barium carbonate precipitated from sugar solutions and heated to obtain barium sulphide.
