Abstract

The acid coagulating bath used in the manufacture of artificial threads, bands, films, &c. from viscose contains the salts of univalent and bivalent metals, for instance sodium and magnesium sulphates, and in such proportion that the product is rendered insoluble under the influence of the multivalent metals but is not converted into cellulose hydrate. The product is finally converted in an acid-fixing bath or by the coagulating liquid carried away by the threads &c. A suitable bath contains 7-7.5 per cent sulphuric acid, 7-7.5 per cent sodium sulphate, and 30-35 per cent magnesium sulphate. To the bath may be added an organic substance such as glycerine. Specification 10094/06 is referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) includes also a modification in which the bath contains salts of univalent metals and of multivalent metals such as those of the "sulfammonium group." This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 2485/15 and 167,076.
