Abstract

A process for the production of films from brown alga and like seaweeds comprises the following steps. The brown alga or the like is immersed in aqueous sodium carbonate, filtered, and to the viscous solution is added dilute acid. The gelatinous substance is dissolved in a solution of alkali salt containing ammonia, filtered and reprecipitated and bleached, by adding a mixture of dilute hydrochloric and nitric acids. The washed and dried material is then dissolved in a mixture of aqueous sodium carbonate and a product obtained by passing mixed vapours of alcohol and ketone produced by dry distillation of lime acetate over a heated mixture of nickel and calcium sulphide. The solution, after maturing and diluting, is formed into films by coagulation in a bath containing caustic alkali and furfurol.ALSO:A process for the production of films from brown alga and like seaweeds comprises the following steps.
