364,020. Treating artificial silk, straw, &c. BRITISH CELANESE, Ltd., 22, Hanover Square, London. Sept. 25, 1930, No. 28685. Convention date, Oct. 8, 1929. Addition to 363,426. [Class 2 (ii).] Filaments, threads, straws, &c. made of or containing cellulose acetate or other organic esters of cellulose or cellulose ethers are treated with a mixture of a solvent for the cellulose ester &c. and a non-solvent less volatile than the solvent as is used in the process of the parent Specification, under such conditions that the filaments, threads, &c. are united into a larger unitary product either uniformly along their length or intermittently, while at the same time the lustre of the material is subdued. Generally the treatment mixture will contain a relatively high proportion of solvent, for example, in the case of materials made of acetone-soluble cellulose acetate, a mixture of 80-95 parts of acetone and 20-5 parts of xylene is suitable. The treatment may be applied continuously with the production of the materials by either dry or wet methods, for example, the liquid mixture may be applied, when dry spinning, in the spinning chamber itself ; or while the materials are travelling from one package to another. The liquid may be applied by means of a wick, roller, &c., or as a spray. In the case of straws, the material is subjected to a flattening operation, as by passage between rollers which may be heated. To obtain ornamental effects, a dyestuff may be dissolved in the liquid. In examples, a mixture of 80 per cent acetone and 20 per cent xylene is applied by means of a flannel wick to filaments of cellulose acetate during their passage through the spinning cell and at distances of 18 inches and 6 feet from the spinning jet; to recently spun cellulose acetate silk there is applied by means of a roll or wick while it is being wound from bobbin to bobbin, 90 per cent aqueous acetone.
