Abstract

324,662. Dreyfus, H. Sept. 29, 1928. Yarns, treating with liquids. - Filaments, threads, yarns, and other textile products made of or containing cellulose acetate or other organic esters of cellulose, for example, cellulose formate, propionate or butyrate, or cellulose ethers, for instance methyl, ethyl or benzyl cellulose, are treated, subsequent to or continuously with their production, with concentrated mineral acids whilst they are under tension. Suitable acids comprise, for example, sulphuric acid of specific gravity 1.15-1.4, hydrochloric acid of specific gravity 1.1-1.2, nitric acid of specific gravity 1.12-1.28 and phosphoric acid of specific gravity 1.3-1.5. Materials treated in this manner possess increased tensile strength. The materials may be stretched either during or immediately after the acid treatment. The acids are preferably finally removed, for example, by washing, but the materials may be given a short run in air before removal of the acids. In examples, cellulose acetate filaments or threads are passed from a bobbin or package direct from a dry or wet spinning apparatus at a speed of 20-30 metres per minute, through a bath comtaining sulphuric acid of 1.3 specific gravity and are carried out of the bath over a feed roller, which maintains a tension therein or runs at a sufficient speed to stretch the materials, into a bath of dilute ammonia and are finally wound or twisted and wound; a ribbon of cellulose acetate is passed at a speed of 4 metres per minute through a bath containing sulphuric acid of 1.22 specific gravity whilst maintaining it under sufficient tension to prevent shrinkage and then into a bath of dilute ammonia and is finally reeled whilst running in water; cellulose acetate filaments or threads are passed from a bobbin or package or direct from a dry or wet spinning plant at a speed of 20-30 metres per minute round a feed roller into nitric acid of specific gravity 1.22 and are carried out of the bath over a second feed roller running at the same speed so that no shrinkage is allowed to take place and the materials are then washed off and reeled; cellulose acetate filaments or threads are passed round a feed roller rotating at a peripheral speed of 1 metre per minute, thence into a bath containing nitric acid of specific gravity 1.28 and are carried cut of the bath over a feed roller rotating at a peripheral speed of 1.1 metre per minute. In order to moderate or render more uniform the action of the mineral acids, substances such as glycerine, glucose or other sugars, alcohols, acetic acid or its homologues, acetone or its homologues, or sulphonated oils, may be added thereto. The Provisional Specification also refers, for example, to the employment of sulphuric acid of 1.4-1.84 specific gravity; nitric acid of 1.28-1.42 specific gravity and phosphoric acid of specific gravity 1.5-1.8.
