Abstract

328,220. Major & Co., Ltd., and Hinchliffe, H. H. Jan. 19, 1929. Aromatic hydroxysulphonic acids are prepared by the action of concentrated sulphuric acid on the condensation products from phenol, o-cresol, p-cresol, a-naphthol, and #-naphthol and aromatic sulphonyl chlorides, followed by dilution of the product with water. The following examples are given: 1-hydroxybenzene-4-sulphonic acid, and 1- hydroxynaphthalene-4-sulphonic acid, by treating the corresponding p-toluene sulphonic esters, with concentrated sulphuric acid, and subsequent dilution.
