Abstract

291,245. Johnson, J. Y., (I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.-Ges.). June 18, 1927. Tanning with special chemicals; combination tanning processes.-Tanning agents are obtained by condensing with sulphur, under alkaline conditions, the water-soluble condensation products obtainable from formaldehyde and phenol, or its homologues or halogen derivatives, and sulphites. In one example, phenol, formaldehyde, and a solution of sodium sulphite are heated under reflux until a sample remains clear after acidification, whereupon sulphur is added and the mixture boiled until hydrogen sulphide is no longer evolved. For use in tanning, the solution is acidified and boiled to remove sulphurous acid. In another example there is condensed with sulphur, a condensation product obtained from a solution of m-cresol in caustic soda, formaldehyde, and a solution of sodium bisulphite, and in a further example the primary condensation product is obtained from p-chlorphenol, formaldehyde, and sodium sulphite. The products may be used in admixture with other tanning agents, whether natural or synthetic, or other substances used in tanning, in which connection reference is made to clarifying agents, such as oxalic acid, and weighting agents, such as sugar.
