Abstract

Tanning agents are prepared by treating a resinous phenol condensation product with an aromatic or aliphatic sulphonic acid containing an exchangeable halogen other than an aralkylhalide sulphonic acid, or alternatively by first treating phenol with such a sulphonic acid and then condensing with an aldehyde. In examples a solution in caustic soda of the resin from sulphur chloride and phenol is heated under pressure with sodium 1-chlor-4-nitrobenzene-2-sulphonate, the product being used as such to obtain yellow leathers, or it may be evaporated to dryness or reduced to the corresponding amino compound, also a tanning agent; a solution in caustic soda of a phenolformaldehyde condensation product is refluxed with aqueous 2.4-chlorbenzene sulphonic acid, the resulting solution being acidified and filtered: the product from sodium a -chlorethane sulphonate and b -tetrahydronaphthol is dissolved in water and condensed under a reflux with formaldehyde in presence of hydrochloric acid; and a caustic soda solution of a cresol-acetaldehyde or paraldehyde resin is treated with sodium 1-chlor-2-nitrobenzene-4-sulphonate and the product acidified.
