Abstract

Sulphurized phenol derivatives.--Readily soluble non-dyeing thio derivatives of phenols are made by heating phenol or a homologue or substitution product thereof (other than a phenol containing nitrogen) with an alkali carbonate and sulphur in the presence of water, the proportion of alkali carbonate being sufficient to produce a water-soluble product. In a modification of the process, the phenol is first caused to react with the alkali carbonate, and the product is heated with sulphur in the presence of water. Advantageously more phenol is used than is necessary for the reaction, the excess phenol being distilled off when the reaction is complete. The preparation of products from phenol, p-cresol and o-chlorphenol is described in examples. The products are specially suitable as mordants for basic dyes, cotton mordanted therewith remaining perfectly white. Specifications 173,313, 298,280, [both in Class 2 (iii), Dyes &c.], and 340,007 are referred to.
