Abstract

414,799. Making tanning -extracts. TRIGGS, W. W., 57, Lincoln's Inn Fields, London.-(Chemische Fabrik Stockhausen et Cie; Krefeld, Germany.) Feb. 28, 1933, No. 5990. [Class 76.] Tanning - extracts are prepared by treating crude aqueous extracts with small quantities, e.g. 0À5 to 1À5 per cent of the dry material, of alkali carbonate or other alkali while heating at ordinary pressure and then treating with small quantities of acids or acid salts under pressure whereby the insoluble "phlobaphenes" are converted into soluble tanning agents. Sulphurous acid, sodium bisulphite or bisulphate and acetic acid are mentioned as suitable acid substances. Caramel may be added to the extract to produce a yellow instead of reddish brown colour.
