Abstract

In the treatment of materials made of or containing cellulose esters with an alkaline liquor, saponification of the esters is avoided by incorporating in the liquor a small proportion of aminoacetic acid or a salt thereof. The following examples are specified. (1) A mixed fabric of cotton and acetate artificial silk is handled for 1 hour in a boiling liquor containing Chicago blue 6B, sodium carbonate, sodium sulphate and sodium aminoacetate to dye the cotton only; if the liquor is used at 75 DEG C. the cotton adsorbs less dyestuff. (2) A similar mixed fabric is similarly treated with the further addition to the liquor of the dyestuff, acetyl-p-phenylenediamine --> p-cresol (cf. Specification 269,934, [Class 15 (ii)]), which dyes the acetate artificial silk a clear yellow. (3) A mixed fabric of raw natural silk and acetate artificial silk is treated for 1 hour in a nearly boiling liquor containing the fatty acid-taurine condensation product of example 4 of Specification 343,899, sodium carbonate and sodium aminoacetate to remove the tussore silk adhering to the natural silk.
