Abstract

603,065. Water repellent materials. HOPLEY, M., LANE, E. S., and IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDSTRIES, Ltd. Dec. 31, 1945, No. 30987. [Class 140] Textile materials are rendered water repellent by impregnating them with an aqueous solution or suspension of a high molecular weight quaternary ammonium salt containing a thermally decomposable quaternary group and (if desired after previous drying) the subsequent heating of the so-impregnated material to a temperature such that the said salt undergoes decomposition, the aqueous solution or suspension containing 5 per cent or less by weight of an alcohol or a phenol containing more than 6 carbon atoms. The quaternary ammonium salts include those described in Specification 477,991 e.g., stearamidomethyl-pyridinium chloride. Specified alcohols and phenols are 17-octanol, 2- ethylhexanol, pine oil, p.-(tertiary-butyl) phenol, and oleyl alcohol. The impregnation is preferably carried out at between 25‹C. and 40‹C. Polyvalent metal salts e.g., aluminium acetate, and other water repellent agents e.g., the diacyldiaminomethanes such as methylene distearamide, may also be present in the impregnating bath. The treatment may be applied in conjunction with a treatment with compounds used to confer creaseresistant properties e.g., condensation products of formaldehyde with phenols or with urea or urea derivatives, the two treatments being applied either separately or simultaneously i.e., from the same bath. In examples (1) a paste of stearamidomethylpyridinium chloride, methylated spirits and water is diluted by an aqueous sodium acetate solution and then by 2- ethylhexanol. Cotton gaberdine is impregnated with this mixture at 25-40‹C., dried, baked, washed with hot alkaline soap solution, rinsed and dried. The 2- ethylhexanol may be replaced by pine oil. (2) The quaternary ammonium salt obtained by reacting pyridine with the reaction product of stearonitrile. succinvl chloride and paraformaldehyde in the presence of anhydrous zinc chloride is diluted with aqueous sodium acetate and mixed with ethyl alcohol and n-octanol. Cotton gaberdine is impregnated with this mixture, dried, baked, washed in hot alkaline soap solution. rinsed and dried (3) A paste of stearamidomethyl pyridinium chloride. methylated spirits, p-tertsiary butyl phenol and water is diluted with aqueous sodium acetate and used to impregnate textile materials.
