Abstract

Condensation products are prepared by condensing a phenol with an aliphatic monoaldehyde containing at least 12 carbon atoms in the presence of an acid condensing agent which may also be a sulphonating agent. The phenol may be sulphonated or the condensation product may be sulphonated. Suitable aldehydes include lauryl aldehyde, palmityl aldehyde, stearylaldehyde, linoleic acid aldehyde and the aldehydes of wool fat or sperm oil fatty acids. Suitable phenols include phenol, cresols, and naphthols. Sulphonated products are water-soluble, reduce the surface tension of water, and have a foaming action. The products may be used in the lacquer industry, in the textile industry as textile oils, cleansing, wetting or dispersing agents, and in the leather industry as tanning or stuffing agents. In examples: (1) cresol is condensed with dodecyl aldehyde in the presence of hydrochloric acid; (2) phenol is condensed with oleyl aldehyde in the presence of hydrochloric acid; (3) cresol is condensed with oleyl aldehyde in the presence of ether and chlorsulphonic acid or sulphuric acid; (4) phenol is condensed with dodecyl aldehyde in the presence of ethylene chloride and hydrochloric acid and the product sulphonated with chlorsulphonic acid. A sample has been furnished under Sect. 2 (5) of a product obtained by condensing a phenol sulphonic acid with dodecyl aldehyde.
