Abstract
An aromatic or hydroaromatic hydrocarbon or a sulphonic acid derived therefrom is condensed with the residue from the distillation of synthetic methanol, with simultaneous or subsequent sulphonation, if necessary. Thus, a mono- or poly-sulphonic acid of an aromatic or hydroaromatic hydrocarbon may be condensed with the distillation residue in the presence or absence of an acid condensing agent, or the hydrocarbon and the distillation residue may be simultaneously condensed and sulphonated, or the distillation residue may be mixed with a sulphonating agent and the hydrocarbon then added, with or without an acid condensing agent. Suitable hydrocarbons are benzene, naphthalene, anthracene, tetrahydronaphthalene, and dihydroanthracene, and suitable sulphonating and (or) condensing agents are sulphuric acid monohydrate, chlorsulphonic acid, oleum, and sulphuryl chloride, or mixtures of any of these. In the examples, (1) and (2) synthetic methanol distillation residue is mixed with chlorsulphonic acid, and the mixture is introduced into a mixture of naphthalene and sulphuric acid monohydrate, the whole mixture being then heated to 75-80 DEG C.; (3) tetrahydronaphthalene is sulphonated with sulphuric acid monohydrate, and the product is heated with synthetic methanol distillation residue; (4) the distillation residue is treated with sulphuryl chloride and then with naphthalene and sulphuric acid at a temperature not exceeding 60 DEG C. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) states that the distillation residue may first be purified. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
