Abstract
1370325 Separation of mixtures of phenols COALITE & CHEMICAL PRODUCTS Ltd 17 March 1972 [2 April 1971] 8537/71 Heading C2C A process for the production of di-tertiary butyl derivatives of a mixture of m- and pisomers of a monoalloylphenol and/or of monotertiary butyl derivatives of a mixture of dialloyl phenols comprises sulphonating a minor proportion of the mixture of phenols with sulphotrioxide and then butylating the mixture with isobutylene. The sulphur trioxide is preferably introduced under the surface of the mixture. The sulphonation may be carried out at 10 to 30‹ C. with the use of 1 to 5 parts by weight of SO 3 per 100 parts by weight of the mixture of phenols and the butylation may be effected at 0 to 50‹ C. The butyl phenols may be separated from the dibutylated mixture by distillation and then be debutylated in the presence of an acid catalyst, e.g. Cone. H 2 SO 4 . Also monotertiary butyl derivatives of a mixture comprising 2,4 xylenol and 2,5 xylenol are produced by sulphonating a minor proportion of the mixture of xylenols with sulphur trioxide and feeding isobutylene into the mixture until substantially 1 mole of isobutylene per mole xylenol has been absorbed. The mixture may be separated by distillation and may then be debutylated at 160 to 210‹ C. in the presence of an acid catalyst.
