Abstract
In the production of phosgene by reacting chlorine with carbon monoxide in the presence of a catalyst, the process is conducted under superatmospheric pressure. Pressures of 20-300 say 150 pounds per square inch may be employed, and the temperature should be below 280 DEG C. The catalyst may be an activated charcoal such as activated coconut charcoal. The reaction may be conducted in water-cooled leadlined mild steel tubes. Unlined steel tubes may be used at temperatures below 150 DEG C. Alternatively, the reaction zone may be an annulus packed with catalyst and cooled on both external and internal surfaces. The reaction may be effected in two stages, the first at a temperature not exceeding 280 DEG C and the second at a temperature not exceeding 60 DEG C. The carbon monoxide is preferably employed in slight excess and may be in the form of producer gas or derived from the reaction of oxygen with coke. Liquid phosgene may be recovered from the exit gas by cooling to -40 to -55 DEG C., the tail gases being freed from residual phosgene by charcoal absorption or washing with aqueous caustic alkali.
