Abstract

Carbon monoxide or hydrogen are produced from methane or gases containing it, such as natural gas, illuminating gas or coke oven gas, by subjecting these gases at high temperatures, 600-1,000 DEG C. preferably 800-1,000 DEG C., to the action of the higher oxides of the heavy metals, that is, metals having a specific gravity of 4,5 or more, which oxides are not reduced by hydrogen under the conditions of working; the pressure employed may be below, above or atmospheric. Restoration of the higher oxide after reduction is effected by treatment with air, steam, or carbon dioxide, practically pure nitrogen, hydrogen and carbon monoxide being thereby produced. Suitable metallic oxides are those of chromium, titanium, tungsten and molybdenun. To prevent gradual disintegration of the oxides, they are mixed with substances stable to the reaction e.g. magnesium or aluminium oxide. Examples are given of the treatment of methane by titanium dioxide and a mixture of magnesium and chromic oxides, restoration of the reduced oxides being effected by treatment with air and steam respectively.
