Abstract

In the production of furnace atmosphere gases consisting mainly of nitrogen, hydrogen-containing fuels, such as hydrocarbon oils, coal gas and ammonia, are burnt with excess oxygen or air, and the products of combustion, preferably after removal of water vapour, are passed over carbon heated to a temperature of 800 DEG C. or over to convert the remaining oxygen to carbon monoxide. The process ensures that the resulting atmosphere gas contains no free hydrogen.
