Abstract

Electro corundum is made by a process of reduction of an alumina containing mineral, in which the ratio R of the percentage by weight of oxygen combined in the form of iron, silicon and titanium oxides to the percentage by weight of alumina in the mineral is at least 19: 100 in which, in a first stage, the mineral is reduced in a combustion furnace at 1100 DEG to 1300 DEG C. with at least the amount of a reducing agent, which may be a solid carbonaceous material, e.g. coke, charcoal, or a gaseous hydrocarbon, e.g. coal gas, methane, natural gas, or hydrogen, carbon monoxide, or a mixtures of gases, which is required for the reduction of the radio R to below 19: 100 and, in a second stage, the product of the first stage is subjected to electro-carbo-thermal reduction in an electric arc furnace at at least 2000 DEG C. with at least the amount of carbon required to reduce the oxide impurities in the product of the first stage. The examples describe the use of coke as reducing agent for both stages.
