Class 72 A method of reducing iron oxides in a rotary kiln comprises feeding iron oxide and a solid carbonaceous reducing agent into one end of a kiln to form a moving bed occupying between 30 and 50 per cent of the kiln volume, adding a combustible gaseous mixture to the opposite end of the kiln and an oxygen containing gas at spaced intervals along the kiln, the combustible gas being burned progressively by controlled admission of oxygen to maintain a desired temperature, the carbon monoxide produced by the action of the reducing agent being used to supplement the combustible gas which is substantially completely burned before leaving the kiln. As shown, the iron oxide and reducing agent may be added to a rotary kiln 1 from a conveyer 10, and a combustible gas added through a pipe 16 at the opposite end of the kiln. Oxygen containing gas, e.g. air, may be fed into the kiln through pipes 20, the amount being controlled by the valves 22 so that a desired temperature is maitained along the furnace and only the combustible gas and the carbon monoxide produced by the reduction of the iron oxide is burned.
