Description
KAISERLICHES A IMPERIAL A
PATENTAMT.PATENT OFFICE.
The present invention relates to a method for cleaning alumina-containing materials. According to the method described in American patent specification 677207 (see also German patent 135553) the cleaning of alumina materials, e.g. B. of bauxite and the like. that the alumina-containing material in the presence of reducing substances and in the presence one alloying itself with the impurities, possibly during the process self-formed heavy metal undergoes an intensive melting process in an electric furnace subject. The reduction is done in this one process either by adding Aluminum or aluminum alloys, or by adding carbon, if necessary can originate from the electrode material. In performing this procedure, it is found desirable to use the amount the part added from the outside by the connection of the part from the electrodes originating coal with the oxygen of the impurities formed carbon oxide gas, as far as possible to restrict resp. unhindered escape of the gas from the Allow batch, since the large amounts of gas produced in the process very often a hurling more or less large part of the batch out of the furnace and monitoring of the cleaning resp. Complicate the melting process. In addition, the procedure requires a disproportionately high one Expenditure of electrical energy, due to the fact that the molten mass supplied Amount of heat is partly lost through radiation uselessly.
The present method now provides better monitoring of the melting process and a significant decrease in what is required to produce the melt Expenditure of electrical energy, as well as better utilization of the melted Mass communicated amount of heat achieved by the fact that the material before it is subjected to melting, a prior treatment by the electric Undergoes current, whereby it undergoes such a transformation that at the later Melting does not just exclude the occurrence of large amounts of gas as far as possible, but also allows the evolved gases to easily escape from the charge will.
Falls nicht genügend Eisen vorhanden ist, wird Eisen oder ein anderes Schwermetall entweder als solches oder in Form von OxydAccording to the present invention, this is accomplished by adding the method to subjecting impure alumina, bauxite or the like (including the silicates) first glows and then mixes it with such an amount of coal that it is used for reduction the impurities contained in the clay, which essentially consist of iron oxide, Silicic acid and titanic acid are sufficient. If there is not enough iron is iron or another heavy metal either as such or in the form of oxide
Statt nun aber, wie dies bisher geschehen ist, diese Mischung sofort zwecks Schmelzung in den elektrischen Öfen einzubringen, unterwirft man die Mischung bereits vorher der Einwirkung des elektrischen Stromes, in einer besonderenadded in such an amount that this is done together with the iron already present is sufficient to form an alloy with the silicon and the titanium. Instead of how This has been done so far, this mixture immediately for the purpose of melting into the electrical Bringing ovens, the mixture is already subjected to the action of the electric current, in a special one
It is not just the water that becomes much more complete driven out than this can be done by glowing alone, but the material is thereby transferred into a state in which later in a special Operation to be performed melting the escape of large amounts of gas and the ejection the batch is no longer to be feared. There is a previous reduction going on, with that being an impurity existing iron oxide is reduced essentially to metallic iron and the silicic acid and the titanic acid one partially experienced reduction. With some types of bauxite the material sinters together, d. H. it is subject to an incipient melting. This sintering has to take place right from the start Melting has the advantage that the impurities are slowly reduced and the Mass retains a porous nature so that the gases can easily escape. After this the mass has been left to cool, it is removed from the oven, if necessary broken into pieces and then in a special operation by means of the electric Stromes melted. During the melting process, there is a reduction in impurities completed and the reduced iron, silicon and titanium aggregate into molten ones Masses together, which after completion of the procedure are easily purified from the Alumina can be separated.
Since it is important in the present invention, the escape of large amounts of gas to avoid it, it is advisable to use such a type of electric furnace in which the heat does not remain concentrated on a certain point, but rather as possible evenly distributed through the whole mass.
One can use the electrical one used for the aforementioned previous treatment Make the furnace in such a way that it is large, granular or compact Coal ordering core, around which the material is piled, similar to that of the known core used for the production of carborundum furnaces, and in such In this case, the current flowing through this core has to be regulated in such a way that it transfers the batch to be treated to that for the work heated to a suitable temperature, d. i.e., up to a temperature at which the iron oxide is reduced and the silica and in some cases also the titanic acid partially or is reduced entirely, but without any significant melting of the bauxite before it goes.
It has proven to be the best and most expedient way to achieve the ultimate goal of this previous one Treatment of bauxite proved that you can treat the material, namely the raw, with coal and, if necessary, with Iron mixed bauxite piles around the melting zone in the same electric furnace that practically forms part of the furnace in which the separately carried out final process of melting and cleaning "the pretreated portion of the Bauxits takes place. In this way, the waste heat from the melting process is used and the heat given off by the molten insert after melting and separation is so intense that it can be used without Melting a lot of material is heated and partially reduced, which is subsequently is treated in the same furnace or in a different furnace in the melting zone while a new amount of material is piled up around the melt zone and treated as before will.
The apparatus used here may be of the type illustrated in the drawing. Here, Fig. 1 shows in longitudinal section one for the practical implementation of the invention suitable apparatus and FIG. 2 shows a horizontal section along the plane II - II of the Fig. Ι represents.
Die Schmelzung wird innerhalb des inneren Mantels 4 dadurch eingeleitet, daß man die Hängeelektroden mit der aus Kohle bestehenden Bodenplatte in Verbindung bringt, den Strom eintreten läßt und dann die Hängeelektroden etwas anhebt, um einen Lichtbogen zu bilden, und dann um diese bereits vorbehandeltenOne electrode 2 of the apparatus, which consists of carbon, is supported by a round block or a bottom plate formed while one or more carbon rods hanging from above 3 or a group of rods represent the other electrode. Two concentric housings or jackets 4, 5 made of sheet iron are placed on the base plate 2 made of coal, the inside of the inner jacket 4 representing the melting zone. The one between the two Sheaths remaining space 6 is filled with a mixture of coal and bauxite and, if necessary, with special filled in with added iron. The melting is within the inner shell 4 thereby initiated that the suspension electrodes with the base plate made of carbon connects, lets the current enter and then lifts the hanging electrodes a little to form an arc, and then around these already pretreated
The inner iron coat is functional, about at 7, pierced so that any gas formed can escape on all sides; there are also outlet openings 8 for the gas in the outer jacket. For the purpose of To further facilitate the escape of the gases formed, it is advisable to use bauxite in coarsely comminuted, granulated to be used, or if powdered material is used, the same can be done to bricks with the addition of a small amount of a carbonaceous binder, e.g. B. Tar or molasses, compress. The escaping gas, if it is from the Electrodes removed, an extraordinarily high temperature and gives this heat to the Material through which it flows, with the non-reduced use im outer part 6 of the furnace and, to a certain extent, the material around the electrodes around, which is then to be melted, is heated. To the extent that the procedure As the batch progresses, the charge in the melting zone is melted more and more and as the mass of molten material rises more and more, more of the batch is added. This molten material gives part of its heat to the fresh one, the melting zone surrounding batch to be subjected to the pretreatment, the temperature of which increases and a partial reduction of the impurities caused. The process then continues until enough material has melted in the interior than the furnace can accommodate without difficulty or as much as the applied electric Can receive energy at once in a molten state; because it is not desirable to continue the proceedings so long until some of the batch, once melted, is solidified by trying to melt too much at once will. The current is then interrupted and the hanging electrodes are pulled out and the furnace is left in this state. The liquid bauxite and the iron alloy in the melting zone cool
This is an important part of the process, when carried out under the most favorable conditions, for the reason that a significant part of the otherwise lost heat of the molten alumina is harnessed, which is an extraordinarily high temperature because of the known high melting point of the alumina must own. This heat is largely transferred to the charge surrounding the melting zone and causes the coal in it to react with the iron oxide present and to a greater or lesser extent with the silica and titanic acid, and at the same time the last traces of water are driven off , which in the usual exclusive annealing process, as it is z. B. in the method of the patent 135553 i ns is taken, are almost impossible to remove. If this pretreatment is carried out on a fairly large scale, it will be found desirable to leave the furnace for a few days, and even two or three weeks, after the current has been interrupted. But since bauxite is a very poor conductor of heat, the transfer takes place slowly from the inside to the outside, so that the inner mass remains hot and its outer parts continue to heat up for a fairly long time.
If the stove has stood for long enough, it will be torn down and that will not molten material surrounding the inner melting zone in which the impurities partly reduced, but not yet deposited and some of which have already begun to melt or at least partially sintered together, taken out and into larger or smaller pieces broken and used in the enamel zone in the following operation, taking a fresh mixture of raw untreated bauxite and charcoal, as before described, is applied to form the outer parts of the furnace and the heat of the Utilize batch that would otherwise be lost.
The procedure is successful with a flow of about 500 horse powers at approximately 50 volts and 7200 amps have been carried out, with the charge on a carbon plate about 2.135 m in diameter and about 35.28 cm high and hung using a group of five Carbon rods that represent the hanging electrode. But these details can can of course be changed.
