Abstract

1449627 Desulphurizing coke LUMMUS CO 15 Nov 1973 [24 Nov 1972 31 Aug 1973] 53103/73 Heading C5G Coke is desulphurized by contacting at 1200‹ 1800‹ F. in a reducing atmosphere with a gas comprising phosgene and/or a mixture of Co and Cl 2 for a a time sufficient to produce a coke having a sulphur content of no greater than 0À85% by weight. The coke may be admixed with a ferruginous material comprising an oxide of iron, iron and/or mixture thereof and/or a desulphurizing promoter comprising H 2 SO 4 and/or ferric sulphate. The coke may be derived from petroleum sources (e.g. reduced crudes, gilsonite and tar sand bitumines), coal sources (e.g. coal tar pitch or coal tar) or solid feedstocks such as coal. The desulphurized coal, may be washed, dried, ground and subjected to magnetic separation to produce low ash coke.
