Abstract

Coke is prepd. from a high-S premium hydrocarbon petroleum coking feed contg. in soln. (a) an Fe cpd. in amt. to give an Fe level of 0.05-0.5 wt.%, or (b) an acetylacetonate of Fe, Ca, Al or Mn. The feed is heated in a coking furnace and fed to a coking drum. The coke is used to make graphite electrodes, esp. for the steel industry. The additive acts as puffing inhibitor. A lower amt. of inhibitor is used, and the electrodes have a lower impurity content.
