Description

The use of red mud. as an additive in wind freshening of melts, e.g. B. in the Thomas converter It was found that when wind freshening of melts, e.g. B. in the Thomas converter, instead of the usual and well-known ferrous ones Aggregates such as scrap and ore, in whole or in part, red mud can be used can. Red mud is a by-product of the extraction of alumina from high iron content Bauxites. It has roughly the following composition: 40% moisture, 32% Fe203, 1: 2%, A1203, 4? / O water of crystallization, 2.5. '/ O S'021 q.0 / 0 T'02, 2% Na2O, 1% CaO and low contents of Mg0, S03, P205, V205 and other impurities; its utilization is a constant concern of the aluminum industry. To this day, the red mud has one - economically significant use not found, of which the giant heaps of the Aluminum works testify. Attempts have already been made to extract these residues the metal oxides contained in them, especially iron, with admixture of other substances or the red mud in a dried state, in pressed form or with sintered fine ore together as aggregate in the blast furnace to blow in or to admit, without thereby real economic exploitation or to be able to significantly reduce the stockpiles.

According to the invention, the red mud should preferably be in dried, porous, lumpy form is placed in the converter before the start of the blowing. It was observed that a particular foaming of the slag during the decarburization period does not occur. During the freshening process, especially in the-second Half of the decarburization period, the red mud should preferably be in the form of briquettes or added as sintered material.

It was also found that when using red mud the Thomas slag increased its content of citric acid-soluble phosphoric acid learned.

The added amounts of red mud depend on the one hand its composition, on the other hand according to the available pig iron, and converter ratios and can be 15 to 50 kg / t pig iron.

In sintered or briquetted form, additives can be added to the red mud, such as lime, fine ore or the like, and / or binders, such as pitch, tar or the like, added be.
