Abstract
690,776. Materials for making coke. HOUILLERES DU BASSIN DE LORRAINE. April 13, 1951 [April 24, 1950], No. 8608/51. Class 55(ii) A method of making a metallurgical coke from a weakly caking coal with a low content of bitumen and having a volatile matter content of from 27 to 45 per cent, an oxygen content of from 2 to 9 per cent and a swelling index of from 2 to 9, for example a Saar-Lorraine coal, comprises grinding the coal to about 2 to 4 mms. size, mixing it with ground bituminous coal and with crushed coke breeze or anthracite dust so that the volatile matter content of the mixture lies between 27 and 33 per cent and carbonizing it at 1150‹ to 1350‹C. Before carbonizing, the mixture is preferably rammed into a dense mass. In an example, 75 per cent of the weakly caking coal was mixed with 9 per cent of a bituminous coal containing 18 to 25 per cent of volatile matter and having an oxygen content of less than 5 per cent and with 16 per cent of crushed coke breeze, the mixture being carbonized in a coke oven at 1150‹ to 1250‹C.
