Abstract

732,518. Materials for making coke. STEINKOHLENBERGWERK HANNOVERHANNIBAL AKT.-GES. Aug. 13, 1953 [Aug. 14, 1952], No. 22331/53. Class 55 (2). A shaped coke of low combustibility for foundry shaft furnaces comprises about 80-90 per cent. high temperature fine coke bound with tar or, e.g. mineral oil residues with or without coal or pitch, and hardened by carbonizing as for 6-8 hours with a final temperature of at least 1000‹ C. The coke is formed in unit sizes of 350 to 600 and 600 to 1000 c.cs. with respective maximum porosities of 35 and 40 per cent for furnaces with diameters up to 800 mms. and for those above. The fine coke should not exceed 3 and 5 mms., nor 1 mm. in the case of easily combustible coke. In an example, 87 per cent of pit coke breeze ground to a size not exceeding 5 mms. is impregnated with a suspension at 100‹ C. of 5 per cent bituminous coal up to 1 mm. in size and 8 per cent pit coal tar and the mixture pressed into cubes under a pressure of 700 kg. 1cm.<SP>2</SP>, and hardened by heating for 7 hours up to 1000‹ C.
