Abstract

A coke of non-uniform density having pieces of a density between 0.7 and 1.1 g/cm.3 and pieces of a density between 1.1 and 1.5 g/cm.3 is manufactured by coking a coking coal in admixture with coal briquettes which when coked alone do not fuse together. The coal briquettes may comprise non-coking coals or oxidized coals or fine grained cokes in admixture with poorly-coking or strongly-coking coals and a binder such as pitch. The mixture to be coked may contain between 5 and 30% by weight of briquettes when it is desired to produce a blast-furnace coke and between 30 and 50% by weight when it is desired to produce a cupola furnace coke. In one example, a mixture of coking coal and briquettes was coked for 22 hours at 1150 DEG C.
