805,279. Reducing iron ores. UNTERNEHMUNGEN DER EISEN-UND STAHLINDUSTRIE A. G., FUR. Feb. 1, 1957 [Feb. 4, 1956], No. 3585/57. Class 72 In a process in which iron ore and carbonaceous fuel are charged into one end of a rotary furnace and an oxidizing gas introduced at the other, the iron being produced in a lumpy condition, the oxidizing gas is introduced with sufficient velocity to give a pressure throughout the furnace greater than atmospheric. As shown, a furnace 1 may have a baffle ring 4 which extends into a discharge head 3, and a blast pipe 5 in the discharge head which stops short of the baffle ring. The oxidizing gas may be introduced at a velocity of 10 to 30 metres per second to give lumps of iron of low carbon content or, in a modification of the process at 50-150 metres per second to give liquid iron containing above 1.5 per cent carbon. Part of the gas may be introduced through the blast pipe and the remainder by injection action through the baffle or through a second blast pipe at a lower velocity.
