Abstract
Steel is made in a converter by a first stage of blowing through the bottom tuyeres to a carbon content of 0.7 to 1.5% and top blowing in a second stage with lime loaded oxygen with the converter turned down. Lime may be added during the first stage in the form of lumps, powder or briquettes, or it may be supplied as a powder suspended in the bottom blown gas which may be air enriched to 30% oxygen. With low silicon irons, the slags from the previous operation may be suitable for the first stage without further addition of lime. During the second stage, ores, oxides of iron, or siliceous materials may be added in bulk or in the form of powder blown in with the gas, and in the latter part of the second stage the oxygen may be free from suspended additions. At the end of the second stage the refining may be terminated leaving the steel with low phosphorous and relatively high carbon content, or the carbon content may be reduced in a third stage in which bottom blowing is resumed.
