Abstract

In a process for the manufacture of cast iron in a blast furnace from a charge of solid fuel ore, and possibly flux, air at least as rich in oxygen as ordinary air is normally blown into the furnace permanently through at least two rows of nozzles, the oxygen content and/or the temperature being different for at least two levels of nozzles. The upper level of nozzles may be considered as the normal blowing level. The temperature of the furnace may be controlled by varying the temperature of or introducing water or water vapour into the air blown through at least one level of nozzles. The air in the lowest level of nozzles may be oxygenated. Sulphur and silicon may be reduced by the use of a large or small quantity of slag respectively.
