Abstract
11,590. Loiseau, O. May 28. Carbon monoxide is produced from a mixture of oxygen, and carbon dioxide by passing it over incandescent graphite, coke, anthracite, &c., the proportion of carbon dioxide being the less the higher the temperature desired. Carbon monoxide in a less heated state than. is required may be added to the mixture blown in. The carbon monoxide can be used for reduction purposes, such as for the production of tungsten-, chromium-, or manganesesteels, &c., the reduction of bauxite to obtain aluminium or its alloys, and the treatment of the rare earths, or in blast-furnaces for reducing ironores. The reductions may take place within the carbon monoxide generator itself.
