Abstract

In the manufacture of flat glass during which the glass is in contact with a molten metal a protective atmosphere is maintained above the molten metal comprising a major portion (i.e. more than 50% by volume) of a gas which is inert or substantially inert at the temperature existing above the molten metal, and a proportion of a reducing gas to react with any oxygen present in the atmosphere over the molten metal, and thereby to inhibit reaction of contaminants at the surface of the molten metal. In the manufacture of flat glass wherein a ribbon of glass 28 (Fig. 1, not shown), is advanced along the surface of a bath of molten metal 12 the molten metal, e.g. tin, is contained within a tank 13, 14, 15, and above the glass is a roof structure with end walls 18 and 19 terminating near the glass surface, and an intermediate wall 27 such that there are headspaces defined above the glass. A further roof 24 enclosed the inlet to the bath. Inlet pipes 20a, 20b, 20c allow for the passage of an inert gas into the headspaces above the glass surface. It is preferable that the gas compositions are nitrogen or argon admixed with 2 to 8% of hydrogen in the inlet region, 3 to 10% of hydrogen in the region between walls 18 and 27, and 0.25 to 3% of hydrogen in the outlet region. The presence of the hydrogen causes any contaminants in the protective atmosphere, e.g. oxygen and sulphur, to react therewith in preference to the molten tin at the surface thereof. The hydrogen may be passed through the molten tin prior to its entering the headspaces. A catalyst may be contained in the outlet headspace, and also the protective gas in this region may be specially preheated.
