Abstract

A graphite body is rendered resistant to high temperature oxidation by coating with powdered silicon, melting the coated silicon, and allowing the molten silicon to flow into the graphite and react at least partially to form silicon carbide. The coating may be applied by flame spraying. Melting may be effected by means of an argon arc welder.
