Ferrous metals and alloys are refined by melting in a sealed vessel maintained at a pressure of 50-30mm of mercury, while hydrogen is blown on to the surface of or into the melt; the supply of hydrogen is terminated shortly before the completion in order to expose the melt to vacuum.
