Abstract

869,791. Spraying fusible materials. UNION CARBIDE CORPORATION. Dec. 23, 1957 [Dec. 31, 1956 (2)], No. 39807/57. Class 69 (3). [Also in Groups II and III] In a process for depositing material on the surface of a workpiece an electric arc is formed between a stick electrode and a second electrode, a gas stream is passed in contact with the stick electrode, the gas stream containing the arc vapours is passed through constricting means to form a collimated arc flame which flame, together with powdered coating material, is directed on to the surface of the workpiece. As shown, arc 40 is formed between stick electrode 16 and torch body 10, powdercarrying gas stream entering the torch through inlet 38 and being heated and propelled through constricted orifice 14 to deposit the powder as coating 42 on workpiece 44. In alternative embodiments, (a) the workpiece is included in the arc circuit, (b) two gas streams are used, one to envelop the arc and the other to carry the powder, (c) an electrode which is separate from the torch body and the workpiece and which is provided with a constricted orifice is used as the second electrode, and (d) a hollow stick electrode is used through which the powder is introduced into the arc. Coating materials which may be used are metals and metal borides, carbides, oxides and silicides. The gas may be inert, oxidizing, reducing, carbonizing or nitriding.
