Abstract
<PICT:0965767/C6-C7/1> <PICT:0965767/C6-C7/2> <PICT:0965767/C6-C7/3> A process for coating a metal base, e.g. Fe, steel, Ni, Al or Cr, with Cr, Al, Ni, tungsten carbide, ferrochrome, ferrovanadium, ferrotungsten, chromium boride, chromium carbide, or for cementation of an iron substrate using carbon alloying particles by arc welding uses the apparatus of Fig. 1. The coating particles 14 may be interspersed with spacer particles 15, e.g. of silica or aluminium oxide, which keep the roller electrode 16 off the surface to be coated 10. The coating particles are fused into the surface 10 as at 14a and 14b by the action of the arc 25. The coating and spacer particles are mixed as a powder and graphite can be added to encourage arcing and the mixture can be applied to a surface which is already painted with a tacky adhesive or a "paint" of the particles in an adhesive can be applied. Fig. 4 shows small alloying particles 64 bonded to the spacer particles 62 and then to the metal body 60 the two bonds being formed by mutually insoluble adhesives. Graphite need not be added to the paint but the adhesive can contain a compound which decomposes to give carbon on heating. If contact is not desired between the carbon roller is not desired between the carbon roller electrode 32 flanges 34 can be provided (Fig. 7).
