Abstract

Polonium is separated from mixture with bismuth, e.g. thermal neutron irradiated bismuth, by maintaining a hydrochloric acid solution of bismuth and polonium in contact with metallic copper to replace the polonium in solution by copper, washing the copper to remove bismuth, and then recovering the polonium from the copper. The solution may be percolated through a copper tube containing pieces or particles of copper, the tube and contents being washed with hydrochloric acid and acetone. Polonium may be obtained from the copper by distillation at 700-1000 DEG C. in vacuo or a stream of inert or reducing gas.
