Abstract
Uranium and plutonium are obtained from their halides by reduction with alkali metal, preferably an alloy of sodium and potassium, both the halide and the reducing agent being dissolved in an organic solvent. Suitable solvents are ethers such as b b 1 dibutoxydiethyl ether and tetrahydrofuran, containing diphenyl. The product metal may be separated from alkali chloride by vacuum melting.
