Abstract

Niobium and tantalum are separated in a process comprising reducing the pentachlorides of the metals selectively to reduce the niobium chloride and removing the unchanged tantalum chloride by volatilization. The reduction may be accomplished with a stream of hydrogen at 550 DEG C. and the tantalum pentachloride condensed by cooling. Material containing niobium and tantalum may be chlorinated to form the pentachloride and then reduced.ALSO:Niobium, containing 0.2-0.3 per cent tantalum is prepared by heating a mixture of niobium chloride, separated from tantalum pentachloride, and magnesium. Niobium may also be produced by reduction of niobium trichloride with hydrogen at temperatures above 900 DEG C.
