Abstract

Thorium compounds mixed with carbon are chlorinated at 700-1000 DEG C., the volatile products fractionated and thorium tetrachloride of greater purity condensed. In the example, a mixture of thorium and cerium sulphates was mixed with carbon and the mixtures briquetted with water. The briquettes were heated to 850 DEG C. in the lower part of a vertical silica tube to which chlorine was admitted and the vapours rose through ceramic or porous carbon packing maintained at about 870 DEG C., and were condensed on a water-cooled silica finger. The first fraction contained less than 0.5 per cent of cerium. Other rare earth metals and manganese, iron, copper and lead may be similarly reduced or removed.
