Abstract

A process of obtaining powdered metals from chlorinatable metal oxides comprises chlorinating the oxides with gaseous hydrochloric acid at temperatures at which the chlorides formed are volatile, distilling the chlorides, purifying them through distillation, reducing the chlorides in a hydrogen current below their melting point to sponge metal, grinding the metal to a size of less than 0.2 mm., washing it with distilled water, drying and after reducing by hydrogen, separating the gaseous products of reduction into hydrogen and hydrochloric acid, and introducing the latter gas into the process. The invention may be applied to the production of powdered iron from its oxide source materials, companion metals being obtained in the form of their chlorides or powdered metal as by-products.
