Abstract
Ores or the like containing not more than 20 per cent of tin are reduced and chlorinated at 600-800 DEG C. so as to obtain the tin as a distillate or sublinate of stannous chloride, the iron and other metals not being converted, to chlorides unless an excess of chlorine is used. The reduction may be effected by heating with anthracite at 600-800 DEG C., chlorine being admitted after the reduction is affected, or the reduction and chlorination may be effected simultaneously by treating the material at the same temperature with carbon tetrachloride, or, according to the Provisional Specification, with carbonyl chloride, or carbon monoxide together with chlorine or hydrochloric acid. The reaction chamber may be evacuated or aerated, or the charge may be moistened after the reaction and before the removal of the charge. Specification 1461/08 is referred to.
