Abstract

In the extraction of tin from ores or concentrates containing additional metallic bases and free silica by chloridization in the presence of solid carbonaceous material, the quantity of the latter used is not substantially less than that theoretically necessary to reduce all the bases present, whereby fritting during chloridization is prevented. In carrying out the invention the ore, carbonaceous material, and a calcium chloride solution may be ground together to the consistency of wet sand, and the mixture be dried to remove free water in a rotary furnace, whereby non-dusting agglomerates are formed. Chloridization with distillation of tin as chloride is then effected in a muffle furnace. The distillate is condensed to form a solution and the waste gases, comprising carbon monoxide, used for heating the muffle. Tin may be recovered by electrolysis, the recovered chlorine being converted to calcium chloride with or without calcium hypochlorite for re-use, or to hydrochloric acid by passage together with a hydrogenous reducing gas over a contact agent such as firebrick heated to redness. The residues from the chloridizing furnace are leached to recover excess calcium chloride. Specification 403,123 is referred to. The Provisional Specification also refers to Specification 276,743, [Class 1 (iii), Oxides &c. Metallic].
